Agriculture and Environment

America: The Chin grew-up in an agricultural society; however, only manual farming practices exist in Chin State. Therefore, although the Chins have vast farming experience, we lack the knowledge and ability to utilize the equipment/machinery that is the norm in America. In addition, because many Chin live in apartment complexes and neighborhoods, they do not have access to land in which to farm/garden. We stress the importance of farming, as it allows the Chin to save on grocery expenses, grow foods not available in local markets, and improve mental and physical wellbeing.  The CF seeks partners willing to:  (a) donate/rent/sell land and equipment, (b) educate/train Chin in farming practices, machinery and technology in the US, and (c) offer employment/business opportunities to qualified Chin. In return Chin would be in the position to become next American farmers while most American turn away from farming even though America still need local farmers.

We have been gardening for more than five years in Indy area. Some like minded churches and farmers lease their vacant lots and we have about 120 – 150 families spend the whole summer extra time in the gardens. It helps our community a lot in many perspectives. In a report of the training to the public in 2011 we mentioned that this was the program that most people had signed up compared to any program we have had. About 120 head of household were in line for registration to the class in order to get a plot of garden. We did the training with Johnson Country Purdue Extension. In the report we included that Chin families who did not have garden got the most benefits because they neither spend any dime nor any time but they got lots of free vegetable from relatives and neighbors. In addition they got half price of vegetable in the harvest time since we have many gardeners in the community now.

As of today our gardeners and farmers work at:

  • Ranger’s Farm
  • Indy Family Farms
  • Balanced Harvest Farm

Chin State:  Manual farming practices in Chin State demand that 3 people must work every day in order to sustain a 10-member family, while the poverty and oppression of the situation demand produce their own food to survive.  As the Chin in America increase their expertise in advanced farming practices, the CF hopes to help advance and improve farming practices for those still in Burma.

One of the most important steps to help the Chin from starving for years is to advance their agricultural and animal husbandry practices since they are the basic survivals. Therefore, we welcome your advice, guide and support in order to save the starving people.
